A memorial service will be held Sunday for Beverly William (Bev) Wallace, a former Compton College, San Francisco 49er and New York Giant quarterback who died Wednesday at his Corona del Mar home. He was 69.

Wallace was named most valuable player in the first Junior Rose Bowl game in 1946 after leading Compton to a 19-0 victory over Kilgrove, Tex. He later became the first player to be selected in the NFL draft directly out of junior college. He played with the 49ers as a backup to Frankie Albert from 1947-50 and then one year for the Giants.

Wallace, a native of Comanche, Okla., is survived by his wife, Vicki Wallace of Corona del Mar; a brother, Verlyn Wallace of Washington; son Greg Wallace of Laguna Beach; daughter Kathy Crystal of Orange, and five grandchildren.
