FISHING / DAN STANTON : Anglers Getting Hooked on Calico Bass and Bonito

The 22nd Street Landing boat Monte Carlo, with its bait tanks full of anchovies and sardines, fished off Rocky Point last Thursday for calico bass and bonito.

Anglers aboard the boat returned with 50 bonito and 35 calico bass. Tom O’Donnell was the jackpot winner with a 10-pound bonito.

Fishermen with near limits of bass and bonito were Don Mosebar, Ken Nomura, Dick Horton, Orlando Dimegilo and Ralph Clark.

Fifteen anglers aboard the Los Angeles Harbor Sportfishing boat Matt Walsh returned Monday from a twilight trip with a limit of 150 sand bass.

Island Update: Anglers using sardines for bait caught white seabass and yellowtail off Catalina.

Anglers also caught barracuda on blue and white jigs. Most of the fish have been caught before daylight.

The L.A. Harbor Sportfishing charter boat Wahinea II had a weekend total of 27 white seabass. The largest seabass was caught by Redondo fisherman Randy Berger.

The 22nd Street Landing boat Freedom returned with 11 yellowtail and four white seabass. Rick Berman of Santa Monica caught a 22-pound seabass.

Ray Hawkes of the King Harbor Marlin Club was joined by Dave Marsh, Del and Steve Michaels and Dave Martines on a weekend surf fishing trip to Mexico.

Hawkes said the group caught 14 species of fish, with many of the fish weighing between three and six pounds.

South Bay catches: Raul Saldana of Santa Monica, aboard the Aquarius off of the big rock area, caught the whopper of the week--a 39-pound white seabass.

Gordon Lanksbury of Long Beach, aboard the Phathom off the east end of Catalina, caught a 22-pound white seabass.

Phil Byers of Inglewood, aboard the Diawa at horseshoe kelp, caught an 18-pound halibut.

Joe Bishop of Redondo Beach, aboard the Sea Spray at Rocky Point, caught an 11-pound bonito.

Freshwater notes: John Johnson of Long Beach caught a limit of catfish that weighed 30 pounds at Anaheim Lake. Gary Poje of Manhattan Beach caught 27 pounds of catfish.
