BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Parrish Goes With Mariners

Less than a week after his release by the Angels, which Lance Parrish called “probably one of the more disappointing things I’ve been through,” Parrish is back in a major league uniform with the Seattle Mariners.

Parrish, who was waived Tuesday, said he chose Seattle over other teams because he was promised a solid amount of playing time. He will back up Dave Valle and occasionally play first base, as he tries to prove he can still be productive at 36.

“A few teams contacted me, and my first instinct was to go with a club that needed help, where I might be able to fit in,” Parrish said. “This is a very young, talented team, and I think I can contribute here.

“Texas had contacted me, and even though it seemed like that would be a good ballclub to go to because they’re in the hunt and they’re a good team, I wouldn’t have gotten much playing time. This is a good opportunity, and I’m looking forward to working with a staff of young guys who are hungry.”

Parrish, who hit .229 in 24 games with the Angels this season, said he understood club officials’ desire to give John Orton the starting job but disagreed with their assessment of his own talents.

“There’s no point in getting into (their differences),” said Parrish, who appeared as a ninth-inning defensive replacement Sunday.

Players said their families back in California were shaken but unharmed by Sunday’s earthquakes. “My wife is seven months pregnant, and she called me and she was crying,” outfielder Jose Gonzalez said. “We have two little children and she is pregnant. I felt bad because I wasn’t there to help her.” Catcher Ron Tingley said his Riverside home was jolted and his family awakened. “My little guy (Tyler) isn’t letting his mommy out of his sight now,” Tingley said.

Angel first-round draft pick Pete Janicki has missed two appointments for examinations on his sore right elbow, according to Dan O’Brien, the Angels’ senior vice president for baseball operations. Janicki withdrew from the Olympic tryout camp because of the elbow. . . . The Angels have signed touted shortstop Chris Smith, their second-round draft pick, and right-handed pitcher Paxton Briley of Clemson, their fifth-round pick. . . . Two of three Russian players scheduled to play for the Angels’ Mesa Rookie League team will attend a news conference today at Anaheim Stadium. The players will report to Mesa Tuesday.
