A Huntington Beach man was arrested Monday after his car allegedly struck and killed a 51-year-old bicyclist in an intersection.

John Majors, 59, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after the collision at Atlanta Avenue and Delaware Street. Investigators said they believe Majors may have been drinking before the collision and were questioning him late Monday, Police Sgt. D. Klopp said.

Guadalupe Gomez of Huntington Beach suffered major head injuries and was taken to Pacifica Community Hospital in Huntington Beach. Gomez, who was not wearing a helmet, was declared dead at 5:48 p.m., about an hour after the collision, Klopp said.

Klopp, who said the accident was still under investigation, did not know from which direction Gomez was struck or how fast the car was traveling.

Majors, who was driving alone in the car, was being held in the city jail.
