A Huntington Beach man and his two daughters were listed in critical condition Tuesday as family friends helped prepare funeral arrangements for his wife and two other children who were killed during an accident in San Bernardino County.

Michael C. Haynes, 39, and his daughters, Holly, 12, and Randi, 7, were critically injured Saturday afternoon when their 1989 GMC Suburban and a second vehicle sideswiped each other and rolled several times on Interstate 15 near Barstow, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Killed instantly in the accident were Haynes’ wife, Laurie, 36, and two of their children, Katharine, 15, and Thomas, 13, authorities said. A passenger in the second vehicle, Nina Motupalli, 18, of Diamond Bar, was also killed instantly, said CHP Officer Tim Larson.

Jennifer L. Gast, 18, of Diamond Bar, the driver of the second vehicle, and two other passengers were listed in good condition Tuesday.

The Haynes family was active at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church and its school, friends said.

“He’s a strong man, very faith-filled,” said Father Gus Krumm of Michael Haynes. “Thank God he has the girls still.”

A neighbor and longtime friend, Sylvia Bush, said the Hayneses were returning home from a visit to relatives in Idaho when the accident occurred.

Funeral arrangements are pending, family friends said.
