BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Harvey’s Elbow Tender for Forkball

Share

Bryan Harvey, who spent 15 days on the disabled list last month because of a sore right elbow, said Wednesday his elbow is “just a little tender” when he throws his forkball.

However, Harvey said the problem might simply be that he has not played much since being activated off the disabled list. Harvey has made three appearances and pitched 2 2/3 innings in nine days, but none of those appearances came in a save situation.

“I’ve got to get out there and find out if it’s going to work or if it’s not going to work,” Harvey said. “But it’s a tough situation, not just for me but for the whole bullpen, because the starters are throwing so well and you don’t want to take them out after eight innings. . . . “

Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann indicated he is not yet ready to send Harvey into a save or pressure situation: “I’d like to see him get a little more comfortable with his delivery. We’ll see how it goes.”

Two chairs, no waiting: With flat-top haircuts the rage among Angel players, Mark Langston brought two hair stylists to Anaheim Stadium Wednesday to help teammates who wanted new haircuts or repairs on cuts done by outfielder-turned-barber Junior Felix. Jamie Baker and Rick Ryan of Anaheim Hills sheared Ron Tingley, John Morris and John Orton and trimmed Scott Bailes’ already short cut. So far, the only short-haired coach is Lachemann, who has a crew cut, but the flat-top brigade could grow. “If we win seven out of 10 on this next trip, I’ll do it,” third base coach Ken Macha vowed.

Orton’s single leading off the fifth inning was only his fourth hit in 34 at-bats. . . . Jim Abbott pitched his fifth complete game, four of which resulted in losses.
