Share

A 39-year-old San Juan Capistrano man was killed Friday when the motorcycle he was riding slammed into an oncoming truck on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, authorities said.

Bob Coverdill Jr. was riding a 1981 Honda Silverwing at about 55 m.p.h. around a turn when he drifted into the oncoming lane and collided with a one-ton flatbed truck, California Highway Patrol Officer Gregory Egger said.

The driver of the truck, Ralph Earl Kingsley, 36, was not injured.

Coverdill, who suffered fatal head and internal injuries, was wearing a helmet that is typically used when horseback riding, Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Earl Clark said.

The helmet had almost no foam lining to absorb the impact, as required under the mandatory helmet law that took effect Jan. 1, authorities said.
