BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Harvey Probably Will Return to DL

Bryan Harvey probably will return to the disabled list because of continuing discomfort in his right elbow.

Harvey, last season’s American League save leader, spent 15 days on the disabled list last month because of pain he suffered when he threw his forkball. It was hoped rest would cure the problem, but he has felt persistent tenderness in the elbow, including during a session on the side before Friday’s game.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen now,” Harvey said. “It feels the same as it did the first time, before I went on the DL.”

Interim Manager John Wathan said the disabled list is the probable option because the 15-day period would include the All-Star game and give Harvey extra rest. “We’ve got to make a decision soon,” Wathan said. “He’s kind of back to square one.”

Chuck Finley’s next start will be delayed two days to give him extra time to recover from the strained right buttock he suffered in his last start, last Monday. Finley’s next turn would come Sunday, but Julio Valera will start instead and Jim Abbott will pitch in the series finale in Toronto on Monday. Finley is scheduled to start Tuesday at Cleveland.

The muscle strain is the second medical problem Finley has had this season. His debut was delayed until April 22 because of off-season toe surgery. . . . Hubie Brooks, who won’t be activated off the disabled list when he is eligible Sunday, remains in Los Angeles.

Whitey Herzog said that he is in Toronto this weekend to get his first look at the SkyDome, refusing to discuss reports that he has talked to the Blue Jays about a trade involving Abbott. The most widely reported deal had Toronto offering Todd Stottlemyre, Tom Hentgen, Rob Ducey, Greg Myers and another player for Abbott. After being rebuffed, the Blue Jays are said to be looking at Padre left-hander Bruce Hurst.

Herzog also said that Manager Buck Rodgers is progressing well enough to be back in the Angels’ dugout during the first home stand after the All-Star break. Rodgers had set that as his target date two weeks ago. . . . That’s the spirit: Bert Blyleven, today’s starter, has given up 1,776 earned runs.
