Soccer Fans, Davis Foes Get Together on Downey
On July 1, Mike Downey listed 50 terms of derision, revulsion, denigration, scorn, contempt, ridicule, mockery, disparagement, affront and insult, not toward a criminally dishonest sports promoter, drug-dealing high school athlete, or swindling agent, but at a game: soccer.
In Italy in 1990, he wrote not of the World Cup, but his hotel decor and his inability to remember the Italian word for beans.
More than 50% of us are “minorities” in this city and play minority sports under contemptible conditions. We don’t enjoy put-downs, which last for years. But a 50-point taunt warrants a reply, although not based in equal hate.
