One person was killed and another injured Saturday at the annual Fermin bull-running festival when a street-cleaning machine ran over them, apparently while they slept.

News reports said the injured person, Spaniard Manuel Marquis, 23, was in serious condition. Police did not disclose the identity of the dead person.

Tens of thousands of people from around the world travel to this northern Spanish city for the centuries-old July 6-14 San Fermin festival, made famous by American authors Ernest Hemingway and James A. Michener in their books “The Sun Also Rises” and “Iberia.”

The celebration traditionally has been fairly free of violence and crime. But dozens of people are injured annually during the festival’s main event, the daily running of the bulls, in which hundreds of participants sprint along with six bulls through the town’s narrow, cobblestoned streets.

Nine people were injured in Saturday’s run, including a Spaniard who was gored by one of the bulls.
