In the other semifinal, Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan defeated Jeff Tarango, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In the women’s semifinals, top-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia beat Leila Meskhi of Georgia, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, and Gigi Fernandez overcame second-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).
