SAN FERNANDO : Man Sentenced in Swap Meet Slaying

Share

A Pacoima man was sentenced Monday in San Fernando Superior Court to 26 years to life in prison for his part in the robbery and killing of a security guard at a San Fernando swap meet two years ago.

Sergio Ayala, 19, was a juvenile at the time of the crime but was tried as an adult.

According to court records, Ayala and two other men--Richard Lewis Zorns, 24, and Ricardo Rolden, 21--robbed the swap meet manager on June 3, 1990, as he was placing bags containing about $12,000 into his car. Authorities said that as Zorns waited in a getaway car, Ayala and Rolden grabbed the money and began running away. The security guard, Roland Teal, then jumped into a van and chased down Ayala. As the guard struggled with Ayala, Rolden allegedly came up behind Teal and shot him.

Zorns was sentenced in March to 32 years to life in prison. Rolden is scheduled to go to trial this month.
