LOCAL NOTES : Phebus Wins Windy Opening Match at Pathmark Classic

Keri Phebus established a strong baseline game despite windy conditions and beat Laura Glitz, 6-4, 6-3, in opening-round play Monday in the $150,000 Pathmark Classic at the Crossroads Corporate Center in Mahwah, N.J.

Phebus, ranked No. 2 among U.S. players 18 and under in 1990, had three service breaks in the second set. The 18-year-old from Corona del Mar High School, who will attend UCLA this fall, concluded the 85-minute match with a forehand lob winner.

William Yanagisawa of UC Irvine and Mark Morris of Yorba Linda each posted one-over-par 73s to put themselves in good position to advance to match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Yanagisawa and Morris are among 12 players tied for 15th place after one round on the Edinburgh USA course. Leader Scott Haynie of Baton Rouge, La., shot 69. The top 64 players after the second round of stroke play advance to match play, which runs Wednesday through Saturday.

David Warady of Huntington Beach won Monday’s 57.75-mile stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace, finishing in 9 hours 44 minutes 4 seconds and increasing his overall lead to 4:40:14 over Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md.

The runners ran in the heart of the Rocky Mountains Monday, starting at 6,600 feet in Eagle, Colo., crossing 10,666-foot high Vail Pass then descending to 9,097 feet at Frisco. They have covered 1,063.95 miles since the race began.
