Philadelphia Makes Rookie Lindros Rich
The Philadelphia Flyers said they have signed Eric Lindros, the 19-year-old forward whose rights alone cost them five players, a top draft pick and $15 million. The Flyers have called a news conference for today and will reveal details of the contract then, according to spokesman Gregg Shore.
The deal has been said to be worth $2 million per season. Flyer General Manager Russ Farwell said on July 1 that Lindros was seeking a short-term contract that could be renegotiated, but Lindros said upon arriving in Philadelphia, “I’ll be here six years.”
Philadelphia won the rights to Lindros when an arbitrator upheld its deal with the Quebec Nordiques.
The Flyers gave Quebec five players--goaltender Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci and Peter Forsberg--their top draft pick in 1993, future considerations and $15 million for the rights to Lindros.
