Bogus Charities

Share

I’m writing this as a warning to others. Recently I received what appeared to be an official request for my “annual contribution for the 1992 Ventura County Area Cancer Drive.”

Thank goodness Ann Landers chose that same week to follow up on her Jan. 8, 1992, column where she listed seven organizations that are posing as big-hearted charities when, in fact, they are spending only a tiny percentage on the cause. The rest goes into their pockets.

Two of those names were in this mailing I received--the Pacific West Cancer Fund and the direct-mail firm of Watson & Hughey, who had handled the mailings for the seven bogus charities.

I suggest we all use caution and give where it is truly needed and where it will truly serve others.
