Safety Dana Hall, the San Francisco 49ers’ top draft choice, signed a three-year contract with the club worth $2.7 million.

The deal was announced during a news conference at the club’s training camp. Earlier in the day, the 49ers signed second-round pick Amp Lee, a running back, and ninth-round pick Darian Hagan, a receiver.

That left only two of the club’s nine draft choices unsigned. However, 11th-round pick Tom Covington and sixth-rounder Damien Russell are both recovering from injuries and the club is no hurry to sign them because they would count against the roster limit.

The club also has 10 unsigned veterans, including all-pro receiver Jerry Rice.

Quarterback John Elway strained his left hamstring while running 40-yard dashes Sunday as the Denver Broncos opened training camp.

Elway’s injury isn’t believed serious, and the quarterback doesn’t expect it to cost him significant practice time.

Elway, who termed the injury a “strain,” said he did it on the sixth of 10 scheduled 40-yard runs.

“I tried to run the seventh, but it grabbed and that’s when I decided I shouldn’t run anymore,” he said. “I’ve never had a hamstring problem. I plan on practicing (today) because I really don’t have to do a lot of running in practice.

“A couple of days and it should be all right.”

Linebacker Robert Jones, Dallas’ second pick in the first round, made a big impression in his live action debut.

Jones returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown off Troy Aikman and made several other plays that had Coach Jimmy Johnson bubbling after the 60-play scrimmage.

“You can see why we drafted him in the first round,” Johnson said. “He made plays a normal player couldn’t make.”

Overweight receiver Mark Duper and two others failed the 12-minute run at the Miami Dolphins’ training camp.

The Dolphins want Duper at 192 pounds, and he was about a dozen pounds above that when he reported Saturday. Weight is frequently a problem at training camp for the 11th-year pro.

“I spoke to Duper about his weight,” Coach Don Shula said. “He knows he has to get it down.” Duper will run the 12-minute test until he passes.

Running back Rodney Culver, a fourth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, became the latest draft choice to sign with the Indianapolis Colts.

The signing of the 5-9, 224-pound Culver leaves the Colts with four unsigned draft selections and two unsigned veterans--reserve quarterback Jack Trudeau and reserve defensive back Cornell Holloway.

Heading the list of missing draft picks is defensive back Ashley Ambrose, the top pick overall in the second round.

“We can’t concern ourselves too much with a guy who’s not here,” Coach Ted Marchibroda said. “It hurts him and it hurts us a little bit because we think he’s a football player.”
