BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Blyleven Still in Rotation--for Now

Bert Blyleven will remain in the Angels’ rotation for at least one more start, although interim manager John Wathan reiterated Monday Blyleven would have to reverse course to keep his spot.

Blyleven, 41, is winless in his past five starts and hasn’t made it out of the fifth inning in four of those tries. His earned-run average has climbed from 1.67 on June 16 to 5.29, while his record has dropped from 3-0 to 3-4.

“I would never tell a pitcher, ‘This is your last start,’ but a decision will be made sometime if the situation continues,” Wathan said. “Bert is still going to start for us. He’s just like any other pitcher: If you do well, you’ll keep pitching. If you don’t, that could change. . . .

“There’s going to have to be some changes made in his mentality. Sometimes, when he gets in trouble, he reverts to being the old Bert and tries to throw his fastball past people. He can’t do that anymore and he has to adjust to that.”

Reliever Bryan Harvey long-tossed in the bullpen again Monday and said he felt minimal stiffness in his right elbow afterward. “It’s coming slow,” said Harvey, who is on the disabled list for the second time this season. “Right now, we have no schedule. If it feels good, I’ll play catch (today) and we’ll take it from there. If it feels good Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, hopefully by the weekend I’ll throw off the mound. We’re not pushing it.”

Tests on infielder Bobby Rose showed only a strained right forearm muscle and not a fractured elbow, as was originally thought. Rose, who was examined Monday at Centinela Hospital Medical Center, will return to triple-A Edmonton for rehabilitation.

Freddie Frederico, the Angels’ trainer from 1961-78, died of an apparent heart attack at his home in Mercer Island, Wash. Frederico was 71. . . . John Orton (sore right shoulder) hit off a tee and soft-tossed Monday. . . . Luis Polonia (jammed left hand) is still unable to throw and was the DH for the fifth consecutive game. . . . Brandon Dederich of Fullerton, who attends Cal Poly Pomona, was awarded the 1992 Jimmie Reese scholarship. Dederich is a student trainer and has competed in cross-country and track. Reese, trainer Ned Bergert and physical therapist Roger Williams presented the scholarship before Monday’s game.
