Notes on a Scorecard - July 21, 1992

Share

The two happiest Los Angeles football campers might be Jim Everett and Eric Dickerson. . . . Everett reported to the Rams’ camp at UC Irvine two days early on Sunday, eager to begin work for new Coach Chuck Knox and new quarterback coach Ted Tollner. . . .

Dickerson, who usually enjoys training camp as much as the next guy, has been wearing a smile at the Raiders’ complex in Oxnard and says he has been timed in 4.39 in the 40-yard dash, only about a tenth of a second slower than his personal best. . . .

Tollner, the former USC head coach, is expected to improve Everett’s often-criticized mechanics. . . .

The Rams, coming off 3-13 and 5-11 records, should be reminded that the San Francisco 49ers won the Super Bowl after the 1981 season after going 6-10 in 1980 and 2-14 in 1979. . . .

Al Davis will have a sizable cheering section when he is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Canton, Ohio, Aug. 1. The Raiders are chartering a plane that will bring former players, team officials and friends to the ceremony. . . .

The Raiders’ annual Family Day will be Saturday at Oxnard High. There will be photo sessions with the players and Raiderettes, drills, and a clinic conducted by Coach Art Shell. . . .

The more you watch Orel Hershiser struggle, the more you doubt his future. . . .

Aluminum bats might have had something do with the fact that 49 NCAA Division I players batted .400 or higher last season. . . .

Best game on TV Sunday was Prime Ticket’s replay of portions of the New York Mets’ 16-13, 19-inning victory over the Braves July 4-5, 1985, at Atlanta. . . .

Last year, four official no-hitters were pitched in each major league. So far this year, there haven’t been any, although Matt Young of the Boston Red Sox didn’t allow a hit during a losing eight-inning performance. . . .

Mike Mussina from Stanford, not Ben McDonald from Louisiana State, is the Baltimore Oriole who is the best young pitcher in baseball. In fact, Mussina, 23, might be the best pitcher of any age. . . .

Of the 10 pitchers who were scheduled to start National League games Monday, only Kevin Gross of the Dodgers and Zane Smith of Pittsburgh had more than one victory. . . .

It doesn’t seem possible that Nancy Lopez, the former kid wonder, is 35. . . .

A 3-year-old colt to watch is Double O’Slew. Trained by Randy Winick, the Seattle Slew offspring returned from an eight-month layoff to break his maiden by eight lengths in a six-furlong race Sunday at Hollywood Park. He was timed in a swift 1:09 2/5. . . .

Right now, there isn’t a more solid horse-of-the-year candidate than the 5-year-old mare Paseana. . . .

Look-alikes: Nick Faldo and Patrick Swayze. . . .

The prize money for the British Open is distributed much more evenly than for most American tournaments. Faldo earned $190,000, John Cook got $150,000 for finishing second, Jose Maria Olazabal $128,000 for third and Steve Pate $106,000 for fourth. . . .

Athletes who attended USC have won at least one gold medal in every Olympic Games since 1912. Among those given the best chances for gold at Barcelona are Quincy Watts in the 1,600-meter relay, Dan Jorgensen in the 800-meter swim relay and basketball player Cynthia Cooper. . . .

USC’s schedule--which starts with road games at San Diego State, Oklahoma, and Washington--has been rated the toughest in the nation by several college football publications. . . .

The Brigham Young football media guide is difficult to recognize without Ty Detmer on the cover. . . .

Kimiko Date of Japan had to qualify to compete in the Virginia Slims tournament at Manhattan Country Club last year, then lost to Monica Seles in the finals. For this year’s event Aug. 10-16, Date is seeded eighth. . . .

Seles proved she can win a tournament without grunting when she defeated Jennifer Capriati in straight sets in New Jersey on Sunday. . . .

Among those invited by Jerry Tarkanian to the San Antonio Spurs’ free-agent tryout camp, which starts Friday, are former Nevada Las Vegas players Anderson Hunt, Jarvis Basnight and Gerald Paddio and former Rebel recruit Lloyd Daniels. . . .

A Pernell Whitaker-Julio Cesar Chavez bout might settle the best fighter pound-for-pound debate. . . .

Davey Allison should be thankful that he escaped with only a broken collarbone, arm and wrist after his stock car flipped 11 times at Pocono Sunday. . . .

A radio talk-show host called Eric Lindros a “superstar” the other day. Granted, he is getting superstar pay from the Philadelphia Flyers, but how many goals has he scored so far in the NHL?
