In two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, quarterback Sean Salisbury never took a snap. When the team begins workouts today, the Orange Glen High product will be the most experienced signal-caller there.

Salisbury, 29, elevated to second-string two weeks ago when Minnesota cut Wade Wilson, signed a one-year contract Tuesday night. Five veterans, including top quarterback Rich Gannon, remained without contracts.

With Gannon unsigned and Wilson now playing for the Atlanta Falcons, Salisbury will be the main man in camp.

“This is the day you look forward to,” Salisbury said. “Not just this, but to be under center in a regular-season game, in a playoff game, in the Super Bowl. Every bone in my body tells me I’m capable of doing this.”

Salisbury knows that his first-string status could end as soon as Gannon signs. Regardless of where he stands on the depth chart, however, he’s not going to change his work habits.

“I worked hard as a third-stringer. I’ll work hard as the backup. I’ll work hard if I’m the starter,” he said. “You’re not going to get any more out of me.”

Before joining the Vikings in 1990, Salisbury starred for Winnipeg of the Canadian Football League.

“People asked, ‘Why would you leave the CFL, where you’re a big fish in a little pond?’ It’s because I like the challenge,” he said. “It’s more than just getting paid.”
