Norwalk-La Mirada : School Board Promises No Cuts in Athletic Classes
Rumors of a cut in athletics brought nearly 70 people to the Norwalk-La Mirada school board meeting Monday, where they were assured by board members that the programs would remain intact.
Supt. Robert Aguilar acknowledged that some school principals and athletic directors had discussed changing the districts’ sixth-period athletic classes to academic classes. For athletes on school teams, the last class of the day is set aside for practice.
The move would free coaches to teach an extra class before practice, but also add an extra academic class to student-athletes’ schedules and an extra hour to their days.
“Many student-athletes like myself would have to walk home in the dark,” said Barbara Quinones, 15, of Norwalk High School. “Do you want that on your conscience?” she asked the board.
About 15 parents, students and coaches assailed the board for more than an hour before board members said that they had not heard such a cut was even being discussed.
