IMPERIAL BEACH : Sentencing Delayed in Fatal Shooting
Even though an Imperial Beach man was convicted of participating in a drive-by shooting, the judge in the case delayed Wednesday’s sentencing in order to determine whether the man should serve any time in prison.
Robert Connelly, 20, was found guilty June 4 of involuntary manslaughter in the killing of Alfredo Rodriguez, a Nestor man who was standing in a mobile home park where Connelly and three other men had shot at an unoccupied vehicle in response to a traffic dispute.
Rodriguez was saying good-bye to guests leaving his 7-year-old daughter’s birthday party when he was struck by shots fired from the car Connelly was the driving.
Superior Court Judge Richard Murphy said he felt “it was a close case because of (Connelly’s) youth.” The county Probation Department had recommended that Connelly be sent to state prison for two years.
The triggerman in the Dec. 2 shooting, Anthony Trevino, 19, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years to life in prison. A third man convicted of involuntary manslaughter will be sentenced today.
