BURBANK : Deposit Proposed for Pet Adoptions

Share

The Burbank City Council has agreed to consider an ordinance requiring those who adopt an animal at the city shelter to pay a $30 deposit until the animal is spayed or neutered.

The proposed ordinance, introduced Tuesday night and scheduled for adoption at the council’s Aug. 4 meeting, would change city laws to conform with existing shelter policy, said Fred DeLange, shelter superintendent.

“The wording is being brought up to what we’re doing,” DeLange said.

The current ordinance requires the shelter to seek a deposit from each person who adopts a dog or cat under six months of age and agrees to spay or neuter the pet within a year.

Pet owners presenting proof of spaying or neutering receive their deposit back, DeLange said.

The problem is that the city ordinance currently requires the shelter to neuter or spay all dogs and cats older than six months, DeLange said.

But the shelter has no clinic, so shelter officials ask those adopting cats and dogs to also pay a $30 deposit, he said.
