LOCAL NOTES : N. Huntington Beach Advances at Soccer Tournament

Daniel Montoya scored twice and Patrick Lee added a third goal as North Huntington Beach Football Club defeated Dallas Inter 76, 3-0, in a semifinal game of the boys’ under-16 division of the U.S. Youth Soccer Assn.’s National Cup tournament in Richmond, Va.

Matt Goldman made six saves for the shutout.

North Huntington Beach will face the Pittsburgh Strikers, 1-0 winners over the Michigan Wolves 76, in Saturday’s final.

In a girls’ under-16 semifinal, Reston (Va.) United eliminated the Fountain Valley Spirit, 3-0.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza lost to Victoria Boysen of Fort Worth on the 19th hole of their Women’s Western Golf Assn. national junior championship semifinal at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison, Wis.

Booth put her drive just short of the tree line in the right rough and followed with a second shot that kicked off the green into a bunker. It was the first bunker shot by either player during the round. Booth blasted out of the bunker, then lipped a five-foot putt.

Boysen parred the par-four, 358-yard hole, reaching the green in two and two-putting from 30 feet.

Earlier in the day, Booth defeated Jeanne Ann Krizman of South Bend, Ind., 4 and 3, in a quarterfinal match.

Tiger Woods of Cypress increased his lead to five strokes in the Optimist Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego.

Woods shot a four-under-par 68 on the Torrey Pines South Course. He is at nine-under 207 for the tournament. Gilberto Morales of Venezuela, who trailed by two shots at the start of the round, fired a one-under 71.

Woods is seeking a record seventh title.

The tournament concludes today.

Brandi Freudenberg of Orange defeated Cena Hackler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-0, 7-5, in a quarterfinal match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 16 national clay court championship at Virginia Beach, Va.

Freudenberg has not lost a set in the tournament.

David Warady of Huntington Beach maintained a 3-hour 17-minute 32-second lead over Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md., when the two tied for fifth place in Thursday’s stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace.

Warady and Rogozinski each completed the 43.8 miles from Kensington to Mankato, Kan., in 7:59:09. Peter Hodson of England won the stage in 6:43:40.

The 64-day, 3,000-mile race continues today with a 41.15-mile stage from Mankato to Cuba, Kan.
