Riley Steady Down Stretch to Win All-American Golf

Chris Riley, a recent graduate of Patrick Henry High School, survived two bad holes and won the All-American Prep Golf Championship at Lyman Meadows Country Club in Middlefield, Conn.

Riley’s 76 during Friday’s final round gave him 223, one stroke ahead of Indiana’s Keith Blythe and Washington’s Ryan Kelly.

Riley was tied with Kelly and had a one-stroke lead over Blythe entering the final round. He parred the first eight holes, three-putted for bogey at nine to make the turn at one-over 37. He held a three-stroke lead at that point, but then hooked a tee shot into the water and took a double-bogey on 10 as the lead dwindled to one.

“I just said to myself, I can’t give up any more shots,” Riley said.

And he didn’t. He parred seven of the final eight holes.

Former USDHS golfer Christy Erb shot a second-round 78 at the $700,000 U.S. Women’s Open on the par-71 Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. Erb’s two-day total of 157 is 15 over par and 18 strokes behind leader Pamela Wright.

San Diego’s Tom Phanco and Palm Desert’s Tony Bujan are still alive in qualifying for the men’s doubles of the Volvo Tennis Classic in Los Angeles. Phanco and Bujan are in the semifinals after scoring 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 decisions in the opening rounds. The winner advances to the main draw.

The singles finalists also advance. Bujan reached the quarterfinals with a pair of victories, including a first-round 6-4, 7-5 decision over La Jolla’s Jon Elsberry. Phanco and San Diego’s Ryan Maggart won one match before being eliminated.
