The Chicago Bears put defensive tackle William (Refrigerator) Perry on the trading block at his request Friday.

Perry requested through his agent, Jim Steiner, that the team try to trade him to another club because contract talks are at an impasse, player personnel director Bill Tobin said.

New York Jet Coach Bruce Coslet indicated Friday the team’s starting quarterback job will go to Browning Nagle, the second-year player from Louisville. . . . Running back Gill Fenerty, 28, retired abruptly from the New Orleans Saints on Friday because of an inherited condition that causes back pain and could lead to arthritis of his spine. . . . San Francisco 49er quarterback Joe Montana won’t throw again until Monday, an apparent departure from his announced regimen. Montana limited his throwing to short passes in an early drill Friday and said he would take Saturday off because his arm felt “tired.” . . . Minnesota Viking cornerback Reggie Rutland has changed his name to Najee Amir Mustafaa. “Najee means friendly, affectionate. Amir means worthy. Mustafaa means chosen by Almighty God,” he said. “The name is something you pattern your life after. The name is you. ‘Mustafaa’ will be on the back of my uniform.”
