LOCAL NOTES : Pawlawski Signs Tampa Bay Contract

Mike Pawlawski, former Troy High quarterback, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday and established a scholarship fund at his alma mater to benefit a student who excels in academics and athletics.

Pawlawski, the Buccaneers’ eighth-round draft choice, reported to the NFL team’s University of Tampa training camp Friday.

Pawlawski also plans on making a donation to California’s football program, his attorney, Leigh Steinberg said.

Summer Brown and Sandy Zubrin of the Mission Viejo Nadadores each won three-meter springboard titles in the U.S. Diving Zone D Championships in Beaverton, Ore.

Brown, competing in the 14-15-year-old division, finished with 386.55 points, with teammate Amy Sloan second at 361.70. Zubrin won in the 16-18 division, with teammates Darcy Stewart fourth and Shannon Brown sixth.

In the girls’ 13-and-under platform, 10-year-old Erica Sorgi of Mission Viejo was second and Kristen Marquis fourth.

Mission Viejo’s Tyce Routsen was third in the boys’ 16-18 one-meter springboard.

David Warady of Huntington Beach retained his lead in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace, but the week-long erosion of his advantage continued.

Warady, who led second-place runner Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md., by 6 hours 46 minutes 2 seconds July 18, was ahead by only 1:07:39 after finishing ninth in the 35th stage from Mankato to Cuba, Kan. Warady, whose knee hurts, finished in 8:08:04.

Cyclist Gerry Tatrai of Australia led the men riders as they passed through the Race Across America’s first time station in Beaumont. Seana Hogan of San Jose kept the women’s lead in the second day of that division of the race, which began in Irvine.

Pat O’Connell of Laguna Niguel had the day’s top score in the Main Event Round 2 of the $22,000 Body Glove Malibu Pro surfing tournament.

O’Connell, 20, totaled 35 out a possible 40 points. Shane Beschen of San Clemente, the points leader on the Bud Surf tour, advanced to today’s third round by defeating Shane Dorian of Hawaii.

Brandi Freudenberg of Orange lost to Mylan Torres of Savannah, Ga., 6-3, 6-1, in a semifinal match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 16 national clay court championship at Virginia Beach, Va.
