Nigel Mansell led all but five of 45 laps to win the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Mansell, in his eighth Formula One victory in 10 races this year, averaged 145.897 m.p.h. His time was 1 hour 18 minutes 22 seconds, and he finished 4 1/2 seconds ahead of defending series champion Ayrton Senna of Brazil, who also won eight races last year.
The victory tightened Mansell’s hold on first place for the season championship. Mansell has 86 points to 40 for second-place Riccardo Patrese of Italy, his Williams Renault teammate.
