Warren Moon of the Houston Oilers ended a holdout and will play in Saturday’s exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys in Tokyo. Leigh Steinberg, Moon’s agent, said negotiations had progressed to the point that Moon would make the trip.

Joe Montana trained on an exercise machine while Steve Young guided the offense, causing more rumors about Montana’s surgically repaired elbow during practice.

Montana, who had a tendon reattached to his throwing elbow and missed all of last season, said his arm is “not getting any worse, but it’s not getting any better, either.” The veteran quarterback, who said he will not throw today or Thursday, did not rule out starting Monday’s exhibition game against the Denver Broncos.

“I just have to see how it goes,” Montana said. “I could easily (start). But I don’t want to press it. I have five weeks. The elbow is really tight.”

Washington Redskin Coach Joe Gibbs called a published report that he and team owner Jack Kent Cooke have agreed to a new multiyear contract worth $1.4 million a year inaccurate. Gibbs did not deny that he and Cooke had a new agreement, but he said the salary cited in the story in Tuesday’s editions of the Washington Post was wrong.

According to the Post, the recent handshake agreement between Cooke and Gibbs is for at least three years. If the money is correct, Gibbs would earn more than the highest paid player on his team. Linebacker Wilbur Marshall will earn $1.3 million this season.

Herschel Walker, who appeared to injure his ribs during a full-contact drill, was held out of both practices for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tackle Anthony Munoz missed Cincinnati Bengal workouts with a strained calf muscle and linebacker Kevin Walker was given the day off because of soreness in his surgically-repaired knee.
