BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Davis Might Face Surgery After Season

Eric Davis acknowledged that he could be facing surgery because of a slightly torn ligament on the ring finger of his left hand.

Davis received a second cortisone shot in 10 days on the hand Thursday, causing him to miss his fourth start during that time. He will continue to attempt to play with the injury, but surgery is a possibility at the end of the season if things don’t improve.

“If it doesn’t get better, there are other alternatives like surgery, but I am going to wait awhile before considering that,” Davis said. “I will have at least two or three more of these shots before I would ever end my year.”

Eric Young knows that there is a lot of talk about his 20 errors at second base at triple-A Albuquerque this season but says many of those occurred while making throws on attempted double plays.

“I try to throw too hard, too fast,” Young said. “I try to make every double play. I just need to settle down on my throws.”

He said he finally realized the Dodgers considered him a top prospect this season, when every instructor who came through Albuquerque spent time with him.

“I thought, ‘Something is up here,’ ” Young said last week. “You’re around long enough, you know when something is different.”

Henry Rodriguez has not gotten a hit in his first 12 major league at-bats, but he remains optimistic. Two seasons ago at double-A San Antonio, he went hitless in 26 at-bats. “Then one day, I blooped a ball over the third baseman’s head, and I was raking the rest of the year,” Rodriguez said. “I know I can hit. I just have to get started.” That season in San Antonio, he led all double-A hitters with 29 home runs and 109 runs batted in. . . . The top active Dodger hitter with runners in scoring position is Mike Sharperson at .282. Brett Butler is batting .274, and Jose Offerman is hitting .269. The worst hitters are Dave Hansen (.167) and Eric Karros (.174). Hansen has come to bat 20 times with a runner on third base and has only one hit. Sharperson is batting .438 in those situations.
