Billboards and Beautification

Share

We are delighted to learn of the beautification project for the railroad right of way on Santa Monica Boulevard between the San Diego Freeway and Century City. (Times Westside July 26.)

However, while the article reported the clearing of weeds and garbage, there was no mention regarding the major visual blight in that area--billboards.

For a real improvement of the visual environment on that stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard, we hope the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, who owns the right of way, will work toward the termination of the contracts with the billboard companies. The developers of Century City did just that some 30 years ago, eliminating all billboards on the railroad right of way fronting that development. The result is a greenbelt enjoyed by all.
