BURBANK : Airport to Get New Holding Pads

Share

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority awarded three contracts worth $1.8 million Monday to build an aircraft holding area where traffic controllers can reshuffle the takeoff sequence of planes ready to leave.

The holding pad, a large paved area at the end of the airport’s longer runway, will help speed departures, officials said.

As it stands now, when the pilot of an airplane waiting on the runway to depart is told by air traffic controllers to allow another airplane to take off first, the pilot must roll down the runway and pull over to the taxiway to allow the other plane to depart.

With a holding pad, the air traffic controllers can reshuffle the planes in the holding area without delaying landings and takeoffs on the runway.

The authority voted to pay Excel Paving Co. of Long Beach $1.57 million to build the holding pad. The company will begin work next week and is expected to complete the job within four months.

The authority also voted to pay the RMA Group of Rancho Cucamonga $98,000 for material testing and inspection services. Greiner Inc. of Santa Ana was awarded a $164,800 contract for management services.

About 80%, or $1.4 million, of the cost will be paid by a grant received this year from the Federal Aviation Administration.
