A fire burned about 50 acres of brush Monday on the La Jolla Indian Reservation near Palomar Mountain.

The fire began about 3:30 p.m. near California 76, west of Lake Henshaw, said Fire Capt. Mike Paulete of the California Department of Forestry. The cause had not been determined.

Responding were 13 engine companies, a dozen hand crews, three helicopters and four air tankers dropping chemical flame retardant, fire captain specialist Gary Eidsmoe said. The fire was contained after about five hours and was expected to be extinguished by 8 a.m. Tuesday, Paulete said.
