After missing three starts because of a strained rib cage, Jim Abbott is ready to return from the disabled list and is penciled in as Saturday’s starting pitcher.

Abbott had what he called a “decent” 25-minute outing in the bullpen before Wednesday’s game, and will be activated Saturday unless he has unexpected discomfort today.

Abbott, 4-11 with a 2.96 earned-run average, hasn’t started since a July 11 game against Detroit during which he was injured when he reached across his body attempting to field a ball.

“I may not be able to do things the first time out that I was able to do just before the All-Star break,” Abbott said. “It feels like starting all over. At the beginning of the year, you go out there and say, ‘Here we go. I hope I’ve got it.’ ”

Angel catcher Greg Myers left Wednesday night’s game because of an injury to his right wrist. He will be examined by the Royals’ medical staff today.

The Royals put Kevin McReynolds on the 15-day disabled list because of a slight separation of his right shoulder.

McReynolds collided with second baseman Luis Sojo of the Angels while attempting to break up a double play during the seventh inning of the first game Tuesday.

Former major league veteran Doug Bair hasn’t pitched in the majors since 1990 and has spent most of this season pitching in Cincinnati city league games on Sunday afternoons. But on Tuesday, the 42-year-old right-hander started for the Angels’ triple-A team after signing with Edmonton the day before.

Bair played for Pittsburgh, Oakland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Detroit, Oakland, Philadelphia during his 15-year career. His career record is 55-43 with 81 saves.

In Tuesday’s start, he got no decision, giving up two runs in four innings of a 6-4 victory over Portland.
