SIMI VALLEY : City Sells 837 Street Lights to Edison
The city of Simi Valley has sold 837 streets lights to Southern California Edison Co. after determining it was more economical and efficient for the utility firm to operate, maintain and replace the lights than it was for the city, officials said.
Bill Golubics, the city’s traffic engineer, said Edison paid $519,000 for the lights. Edison already owns and maintains 6,280 free-standing lights along Simi Valley streets, he said.
Simi Valley first accepted ownership of the other 837 lights several years ago when they were installed in new housing tracts at a time when rising energy costs made that strategy more economical, Golubics said. More recently, city officials re-evaluated this plan and decided to sell the lights to Edison, he said.
To operate the lights, Edison is paid from funds collected through a citywide property assessment district.
City officials said motorists and residents who see burned out street lights should telephone Edison toll-free at (818) 999-1900.
