SDSU Moves Budget-Protesting Students

Share

San Diego State University officials on Friday relocated the encampment of students protesting budget cuts from a site in front of the main administration building to a designated student free speech area near Aztec Center.

University police and maintenance administrators loaded two vans with tables and other materials used by about half a dozen students during the past three months as part of their round-the-clock protest.

There were no injuries or confrontations, according to SDSU spokesman Rick Moore. There were two protesting students present at the time of Friday’s move, he said.

Moore said that the university felt it could not longer permit the students to remain in the administration area against regulations because the encampment would interfere with increasing foot traffic as the fall semester approaches on Aug. 31.

Guadalupe Corona, executive vice president of the Associated Students, said Friday that the move puts the protesting students away from the busiest area of the campus.

She said that students already have planned a campuswide “Sleep Under the Stars” protest in front of the administration building on Aug. 30, the night before the first classes.
