Quarterback John Friesz of the San Diego Chargers will undergo surgery for a knee injury suffered in the team’s 35-14 exhibition loss to Phoenix Saturday night and might miss the season, a team spokesman said Sunday.

Friesz was hurt in the second quarter when Cardinal linebacker Ken Harvey fell into his left knee. He laid on the field for several minutes before being taken off on a cart.

Perry Williams scored on a 38-yard interception return and Matt Bahr kicked two field goals Sunday night as the New York Giants defeated Cincinnati, 13-7, in Dave Shula’s debut as Bengals’ coach.
