West Hollywood : Sickout by City Employees

Share

Most members of West Hollywood’s principal city employees union staged a sickout Monday as part of a dispute over layoffs, pay and benefits. Union members also staged a demonstration Wednesday along the median of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Kipuakai Kualii, president of Local 3339 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said nearly all of the 100 workers in the union stayed out of work Monday, forcing administrators to handle city operations for the day.

Negotiations over pay and other issues have been stalled for months. Negotiators for city employees are seeking expanded protection against layoffs, a 3.7% cost-of-living pay increase and retention of a “cafeteria” plan for employee benefits, in which employees select their own mix of health care and other benefits.

City negotiators are offering a 3.3% cost-of-living adjustment but are trying to eliminate the cafeteria benefit program.
