BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Vote on Giants Won’t Be Rushed
Commissioner Fay Vincent said it was unlikely that major league owners would vote next month on a plan to sell the San Francisco Giants to a group of Florida investors.
Owners are next scheduled to gather in St. Louis on Sept. 9-10, and the group seeking to move the Giants to St. Petersburg, Fla., has said it hoped for a vote then.
“It’s unlikely. It would be too fast,” Vincent said in Montreal before the Expos played the St. Louis Cardinals.
Barry Jones signed with the New York Mets, a week after the right-handed relief pitcher was released by the Philadelphia Phillies. He was 5-6 in 44 games with the Phillies. New York also purchased the contract of infielder Steve Springer from Tidewater of the International League. Springer, 31, was leading the Tides in homers (15) and runs batted in (67) while batting .291. His only major league experience was four games with Cleveland in 1990. . . . The Kansas City Royals put outfielder Jim Eisenreich (strained rib cage) on the 15-day disabled list and activated second baseman Keith Miller.
