Brush Fires Sweep Across Scattered Areas of Southland

County fire units struggled late Sunday to contain a blaze that raced through more than 20 acres of heavy brush near Skylane Drive in Altadena.

The fire, one of several that broke out across Southern California, was visible for several miles. The fire burned toward a residential area, but no homes were immediately threatened and no evacuations were ordered.

Two water-dropping helicopters and more than 200 firefighters joined the battle against the V-shaped conflagration as it crept northward from a residential neighborhood toward the edge of Angeles National Forest.

Earlier, a brush fire threatened homes in the Baldwin Hills area but Los Angeles city and county firefighters limited damage to one scorched roof.

The fire scorched 25 acres of brush near the Kenneth Hahn State Park, said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Mike Little.

In Palmdale, a brush fire ignited by sparks from a welder’s torch charred about 100 acres before it was brought under control.

The fire was whipped by strong winds that pushed it away from homes, authorities said.
