From Staff and Wire Reports

A fire that burned more than 1,000 acres of the Barona Ranch Indian Reservation in East San Diego County was extinguished late Wednesday 48 hours after it had started, authorities said.

At least 18 of the 175 firefighters summoned to contain the blaze were injured.

As a precautionary measure, two engines remained on patrol Wednesday night, authorities said. The cost of fighting the fire was put at more than $600,000.

Firefighters fought through daytime temperatures Tuesday that rose over 100 degrees and throughout the evening. Eight required treatment for heat exhaustion, and seven others had irritated lungs from breathing smoke of burning poison oak, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry said Wednesday night.

The fire began Monday afternoon and spread along the reservation and adjacent property controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the spokeswoman said.

Strong winds quickly fanned the flames eastward through rocky terrain between the unincorporated areas of San Diego County Estates and Lakeside. Rural homes and buildings at a glider port threatened by the fire Monday were out of danger by Tuesday night.
