Rudy Suwara, fired last month after coaching the San Diego State women’s volleyball team for 16 years, has filed a $1.75-million complaint against the school.
Suwara contends he was fired in revenge for his outspoken support of a Title IX complaint filed by the parents of one of his players, Shannon Mathew. Title IX is part of a federal law ensuring women and men equal opportunity in sports at federally funded institutions.
Suwara, 50, claims the administration violated an “implied contract” that his one-year contract would be renewed as long as he operated a clean, successful program.
San Diego State qualified for the NCAA tournament in nine of the past 11 seasons without violating NCAA rules, Suwara said.
