A man who chased and shot at several men after they allegedly threw a firebomb into his apartment was himself arrested late Saturday night after he mistakenly shot and injured his own neighbor who had joined in the chase, San Diego police reported.

The incident began about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when a firebomb crashed through a second-story apartment in the 4900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in Ocean Beach, Police Sgt. Steve McMillan said.

Calvin Crawford, 23, who was inside the apartment, ran outside and chased two or three men, firing four rounds from a 9-millimeter handgun, McMillan said. One of the shots hit another apartment building resident, Joseph Lawlor, in the leg, he said.

The arson suspects escaped, and Crawford was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and shooting a weapon in a gross and negligent manner, McMillan said.

The firebombing was being investigated by police as a hate crime because Crawford is black and the suspects are white, McMillan said.
