United Matches Northwest Offer: United Airlines said it will cut fares by $35 to $50 in response to a promotion begun over the weekend by Northwest Airlines. United will offer its discount through coupons published in newspapers across the country. Coupons worth $35 will cut fares of $150 and $249, and $50 coupons will be good on fares posted at $250 or more. The airline said coupons will appear in Wednesday newspapers for use on flights between Sept. 6 and Dec. 14 that are booked by Sept. 4. Northwest’s deadline is Aug. 31.
