CHESS RESULTS : Fischer Wins 1st Game in Match

Share

Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, playing in public for the first time in 20 years, defeated former champion Boris Spassky of France on Wednesday in the first game of their exhibition chess match in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia.

Fischer, playing with the white pieces, used his favorite Ruy Lopez opening to gain an early advantage. Spassky’s play, described by observers as surprisingly timid, did not test Fischer, and the American scored an easy victory in six hours of play.

The second game is scheduled today. The match will continue until one player wins 10 games.
