PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Will Go With One Fullback
The Raiders made no roster changes Thursday and will play Sunday’s game at Denver with only one true fullback and one experienced kickoff returner.
Since releasing backup fullbacks Derrick Gainer and Napoleon McCallum this week, the Raiders have only veteran Steve Smith at the position. Coach Art Shell said that Marcus Allen, Nick Bell and Eric Dickerson would have to fill in if Smith were injured.
“Our first choice would be Allen, but we have backs that are both fullbacks and tailbacks,” Shell said. “Smith is our only back that is a fullback only.”
Sam Graddy, who returned 22 kickoffs in 1991, is the only experienced kick returner. Defensive back Dan Land is the other returner.
