Small Fire Forces ‘Batman’ Audience to Evacuate Show

More than 600 tourists became part of the show Saturday when a small fire forced the evacuation of a “Batman” stunt show at Magic Mountain.

Four park employees suffered smoke inhalation after a pyrotechnic device ignited a foam pad used as a landing spot for one of the show’s stuntmen, a company spokeswoman said.

Sparks from a flame-producing machine that used propane ignited the pad at 1:45 p.m., near the end of the 20-minute show, spokeswoman Eileen Harrell said.

Four amusement park employees grabbed fire extinguishers and snuffed out the blaze, Harrell said. Those four employees were later treated for smoke inhalation at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita and released.

Other employees evacuated about 680 park visitors, none of whom were injured, Harrell said.

About 25 Los Angeles County firefighters arrived as a precautionary measure, Harrell said. The fire caused about $1,000 in structural damage and $2,000 in damage to the set, said Diana Aronson, a supervisor for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
