At least four Oxnard farm workers and two city firefighters became ill Saturday night after breathing fumes in a field on Rose Avenue.

The workers became sick when plastic sheeting was lifted off the ground too soon after a chemical had been injected into the soil, Battalion Chief Terry McAnally said.

Neighbors near the field, at Rose Avenue and Emerson Road, also complained of burning eyes and irritated noses and throats, McAnally said.

Fire personnel called in officials from the county Department of Environmental Health and the office of the agricultural commissioner to assess the situation.

Just before 10 p.m., Oxnard emergency dispatchers called out hazardous material teams and four ambulances to the site and advised firefighters to enter the area with caution.
