Five-Car Tangle Snarls Freeway
Rush-hour traffic backed up Thursday when three lanes on the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway were blocked after a five-car accident.
Barbara Stoner, 64, of Orange suffered facial injuries and broken ribs during the crash, which destroyed her car. She was in stable condition at Tustin Hospital Medical Center on Thursday night.
Stoner was rear-ended about 4:30 p.m. as she slowed to approach stopped traffic just south of Dyer Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Bill Webberburn said. The car that hit her was driven by David Nunnery, 26, of Santa Ana.
A chain-reaction collision ensued, and in the end five cars in two lanes had been hit, Webberburn said.
No one except Stoner was seriously injured.
A SigAlert was in effect for about an hour, as three of the four unrestricted traffic lanes were entirely blocked off to clear the accident. Traffic on the Costa Mesa Freeway was stopped, and the San Diego Freeway was backed up to Bristol Street, police said.
No one was cited, but the accident is under investigation.
