Preview ’92 : What’s on Cable? Think About It ...

As the broadcast networks try to attract teen and twentysomething viewers with their fall schedule, cable is offering a mix for the over-30 crowd that includes, drama, comedy, reality-based shows, documentaries, arts programming, game shows and informational series.

Here are the shows and series coming to cable this season, their time slots (where available) and their premiere dates, in parentheses. Cable subscribers should note that not all systems carry all of these cable channels.

A&E;

“Rave”--A weekly performing arts showcase that includes documentary, performance and entertainment interviews, Sundays at 8 p.m. (Sunday).

“American Justice”--Bill Kurtis hosts an examination of major crimes and how they affected the American justice system, Wednesdays at 6 and 10 p.m. (Wednesday).

“Spies”--Michael Carroll narrates this show of dramatic re-enactments of the world of the saboteur, the code breaker, the traitor and the spy, Wednesdays at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. (Wednesday).

“Travelquest”--Alan Thicke, late of “Growing Pains,” hosts this weekly travel adventure that takes viewers on daredevil quests to remote and exotic locations, Wednesdays at 7:30 and 11:30 p.m. (Wednesday).

“The Real West”--A look at the myths, legends and heroes of the American West, circa 1839-90, Thursdays at 5 and 9 p.m. (Thursday).

“Charlton Heston Presents the Bible”--The Oscar-winning actor who played Moses hosts a four-part series featuring principal stories from both the Old and the New Testament. Heston uses the King James version of both Testaments, (begins Dec. 20).

“Pole to Pole”--Two years ago, Monty Pythoner Michael Palin went “Around the World in 80 Days,” and now he travels to the North and South Poles in this eight-part series, (Jan. 10, 1993).

BET

“BET’s Comicview”--BET’s first comedy series showcases up-and-coming black comedians, Mondays-Fridays at 5:30 p.m. (Monday).

“Love Between the Sexes”--A new game show featuring single African-American men and women vying for cash prizes and a date with a member of the opposite sex, Tuesdays at 5 p.m. (Tuesday).

CNBC

“Donahue/Pozner”--Live call-in discussion series featuring Phil Donohue and Russian correspondent Vladimir Pozner, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Sept. 22.

COMEDY CENTRAL

“Almost Live!”--This half-hour comedy series produced in Seattle features monologues and sketches that reflect contemporary life, Sundays at 9:30 p.m. (Sept. 27).

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL

“Skybound”--An examination of the many facets of aviation as well as engineering advances, technology and the leading figures in aviation, Thursdays at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. (Oct. 1.)

“Heart of Courage”--Alex “Jeopardy” Trebek hosts this series that tells of everyday people who risked their lives to save others, Thursdays at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m and Saturdays at 4 p.m. (Oct. 1).

“Secret Weapons”--John Palmer investigates the development of both physical and tactical weapons, Fridays at 6 and 9 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. (Oct. 2).

“Frontiers of Flight”--Each episode will spotlight a crucial event in aviation history and showcase the people who flew the planes on historic flights. The hour series features classic airplanes from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, Saturdays at 6 and 9 p.m. (Oct. 3).

“Justice Files”--Forrest Sawyer hosts this in-depth look at real criminal cases using actual video along with accounts of participants and eyewitnesses to reconstruct the stories, Saturdays at 7 and 10 p.m. (Oct. 3).

“Wildlife Journeys”--Exploration of the different kinds of journeys animals take and the reasons why, Sundays at 5 and 8 p.m. (Oct. 4).

“Next Step”--Richard Hart and a graphic android host this magazine series about the advances of science and technology, Tuesdays at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. (Oct. 6).

E! ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION

“Stand Up/Sit Down Comedy”--Robert Klein hosts this weekly series featuring a comic’s stand-up performance as well as a one-on-one interview, (Oct. 18).

THE FAMILY CHANNEL

“African Skies”--A drama about a widowed executive (Catherine Bach) who takes a corporate position in South Africa and moves with her teen-age son to a ranch; Robert Mitchum plays her father-in-law, Sundays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (Oct. 4).

HBO

“Rondo: Scenes of a Weekend”--Mary Alice, Juanita Jennings, Vonte Sweet and Mel Winkler star in this contemporary drama focusing on the realities of life in an African-American family; Charles Dutton (“Roc”) is co-executive producer (early 1993).
