ANAHEIM : Fire Chiefs Induct Honorary Member

Share

The International Assn. of Fire Chiefs inducted an honorary member into its ranks Monday, and he is, well, an animal.

The Energizer Bunny--a life-size, drum-banging character made popular in television advertisements--helped launch a firefighting campaign at the chiefs’ 119th annual conference, held this year at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The figure was part of the announcement of the “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” campaign, an attempt to remind people to change batteries in their smoke detectors every time they change their clocks for daylight saving time.

About 10,000 participants from 25 countries are attending the conference, which began Sunday and will end Wednesday. Registration was 20% lower than organizers expected because of budget cuts everywhere, said Capt. Dan Young, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Department.

Included among the activities for the fire chiefs are presentations of lessons learned from the Oakland Hills wildfire and the Los Angeles riots, scheduled for 7 p.m. today.
